A Career in Real Estate: What's It All About?

A career in real estate provides flexibility and freedom to set your own pace.

Helping people buy and sell homes is the most important and basic service
a real estate agent performs.  Agents are experts in the process of buying, selling, and financing property.

 Q.  How much training is required to get a real estate license?

A.  The State of Ohio requires you to take 120 clock hours of education prior to taking the state license exam. 

You must take an additional 10 hours of post-licensing courses within one year
after you receive your license.  You will be required to take 30 hours of continuing
education every three years to maintain your real estate license.

Q.  What background provides the best chance for success?

A.  While a previous sales experience is helpful, we find that people from a
variety of backgrounds have been very successful in real estate.

Q.  When will I know if this is the right career choice for me?
 
A.  There is no hard and fast rule to determine success. 
Most people will know within 6 to 12 months if they have
chosen the correct career path.

Q.  How much will it cost to get started?

A.  The state required, 120 hour, pre-licensing training will cost approximately
$1,200.00 depending on the school you choose.  The cost of taking the Ohio
license exam is $98.00.  You will need to pre-register and be sponsored by a
State of Ohio licensed real estate broker. 

The results of the exam will be given to you immediately upon completion of the examination. 
Currently there is an annual license renewal fee of $39.00.

Q.  Can I begin to list and sell real estate immediately after receiving my license?

A.  Yes, under the close supervision of your broker or manager

Q.  What is a real estate agent’s job description?

A.  There are literally dozens of activities that you can take part in during your business week, including:  

  • Previewing your office’s new listings
  • Previewing properties listed by other brokers
  • Completing paperwork on transactions
  • Following up with customers/clients
  • Following up with prospects
  • Setting showing appointments
  • Showing properties to buyers
  • Attending office meetings
  • Attending educational sessions
  • Prospecting for potential customers/clients
  • Doing listing presentations
  • Learning about title, escrow, closing procedures
  • Answering calls at office during floor time
  • Holding open houses for the public
  • Holding open houses for cooperating broker’s agents
  • Preparing brochures for properties
